About and sources
Stop driving and get help if you notice any of these:
- The brake pedal sinks, feels soft, or the car takes longer to stop; or you hear metal grinding when braking
- The steering feels loose, pulls hard, or a wheel wobbles or clunks
- Smoke, a burning smell, or any fluid leaking that smells like fuel
- A red warning light for brakes, oil pressure or engine temperature, or a flashing check-engine light
- A loud bang or clunk followed by a change in how the car handles
Pull over where it is safe, turn off the engine, and arrange a tow to a repair shop. If there is fire or smoke inside the car, get everyone out and call 911.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Only a qualified mechanic who inspects your car can tell you what is wrong.
How this guide is made: we write these guides with the help of AI tools and check the facts about car parts against published sources listed on each page. Most sources do not confirm the link between a part and a specific noise. These guides are not written or reviewed by a certified mechanic.
Car Noise Notes is operated by Olsen Industries LLC, 2A Floyd Drive, Totowa, NJ 07512. We provide general information, not a diagnosis, repair service or inspection.
Sources and evidence
Each cause links a Wikipedia article marked Learn more. Facts drawn from those articles are attributed to Wikipedia and CC BY-SA 4.0; we use our own wording. A source may explain only the part rather than establish the link between a part and a noise. The note beside each citation makes that distinction. No source ranks how common the causes are.
Safety labels
- Stop and arrange a tow
- Urgent professional inspection
- Arrange an inspection soon
- Note changes
The labels describe conservative priorities for possible conditions. They do not establish which condition your car has, a probability, or a verdict that a vehicle is safe to drive. The stop-driving box always applies. We do not publish DIY repair instructions.
NHTSA checks
We link NHTSA’s vehicle lookup for complaint counts and its VIN recall lookup. The only API-derived facts reproduced here are component labels from 2026-11-05. No vehicle-specific counts, owner narratives, VINs or recall results are stored or displayed. Complaints are reports from owners and are not verified by NHTSA.
